Rights Respecting School

At Ashgate School the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is reflected in the school ethos and curriculum and is demonstrated by all staff.

The principles of the UNCRC are:

  • non-discrimination

  • devotion to the best interests of the child

  • the right to life, survival and development

  • respect for the views of the child

Using the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as a foundation provides a values framework that supports and guides the adults and puts the child at the centre of everything we do.  The children learn about themselves, and others, and their learning is widened to include an awareness of their community and extended to the wider world.  They learn about their rights, through a practice which reflects their rights and they learn of ways in which they can be involved in supporting rights for all children.

We work with all members of the school and with the local community  to learn about  UNCRC and to develop ways in which we can actively support all children to have their rights met.

We are delighted to have achieved the Gold Award for  UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools.
