Lesson: History

Class: Bluebirds Year: 2023 - 2024

Black History Month

In October, we celebrated Black History Month as a class. We took a moment to reflect on why this event is significant and the people who have made it so. We learned about some amazing black individuals who have made significant contributions to civil rights and social justice, such as Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, and Barack Obama. We also discussed the ongoing struggles and achievements of the black community and emphasised the need for continued awareness and action against racism. By studying these influential figures and their accomplishments, we gained a deeper understanding of the impact black individuals have had on shaping history and promoting equality for all.

During physical education class with Elliot, we explored the lives of several influential black athletes. These included Raheem Sterling, Serena Williams, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Marcus Rashford, Mo Farrah, Kylian Mbappe, and Usain Bolt. We studied their contributions to their respective sports and how they utilised their platforms to promote social justice and equality. Through these examples, we discovered how sports can break down barriers and inspire change within society.

In addition, we also learned about the different types of food in Jamaica. We even participated in a cook-off with the entire school, preparing our jerk chicken wraps with rice and peas. Our team did exceptionally well, and some of us even got to taste our food!
